Growth Report

Who can do this with default capabilities?

District Level Administrators, District Staff, School Level Administrators, School Staff, Teachers

This report shows the test results for the students you have selected and measures their progress between two testing sessions. You can use this report to evaluate your students' improvement during the year or over many years.

The report includes each student's name, age, class, teacher, test date, the type of test taken, Scaled Score (SS), Grade Equivalent (GE), Percentile Rank (PR), Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) for the pretest and posttest, and Student Growth Percentile (SGP). The report also provides the mean pretest and posttest scores for the entire group of students.

Notes on the Growth Report:

  • Only students who have taken more than one test appear on this report.
  • Teachers can only create a Growth Report for the current school year.
  • If a student takes two tests on the same day, only the last one will appear on this report.
  • If your district level administrator has set a Growth Expectation, the growth expectation will appear on this report, along with the percentage of students who are meeting expectations and those students who are performing below expectations.
  • The teacher shown on the report is the teacher currently assigned to the class, not necessarily the teacher of the class at the time the student took the tests.
  • Although kindergartners can take Star Math tests, data for kindergartners has not been norm-referenced. Therefore, on this report, no values will be shown for Percentile Rank (PR), Student Growth Percentile (SGP), and/or Normal Curve Equivalents (NCE) for kindergartners.
  • The report will indicate if any students took a test using extended time limits and/or audio, with a footnote explanation.
  • Student Growth Percentile (SGP) will not be calculated for algebra or geometry tests.
  • Students who have had their grade manually adjusted during the current school year will not have an SGP calculated.
  • SGPs cannot be calculated based on imported historical student data.
  • If a student's Grade Equivalent (GE) is capped or is < 1, a dash (–) will be shown in the "Change" row for that student.
  • While SGPs provide the most precise measure of growth, you may wish to consider the changes in other scores as well, such as Scaled Score (absolute change between tests) or Percentile Rank or Normal Curve Equivalent (change in score in relation to grade-level peers).
  1. Click Star Math on the Home page, then click Reports to begin printing the report.
  2. Select your school from the School drop-down list, if necessary.
  3. Click Growth on the Select Report page.
  4. Select the options you want to customize for this report on the Report Options page. When you customize this report, you can choose these options:
  5. Use the drop-down list to choose All Classes, a specific class, or click Students, Classes, or Groups to choose specific students, classes, or groups. ("Groups" refers to groups of students that have been created specifically for reporting purposes.)

    • If a teacher chooses to select by Groups, all students in the selected group will appear on the report, even if they are not enrolled in one of that teacher's classes. (This is a capability that can be changed; see the Renaissance Place help for more information.)
    • When selecting specific students, you will see a checklist of all students enrolled in Star Math classes. Check each student you want on the report, or check the Student box at the top of the column to select all of them.
    • When selecting specific classes, you will see a checklist of all Star Math classes. Check each class you want on the report, or check the Class box at the top of the column to select all of them.
    • When selecting specific groups, you will see a checklist of all student groups in Star Math classes. Check each group you want on the report, or check the Group box at the top of the column to select all of them.

Once the desired students, classes, or groups have been selected and saved, you will return to the Report Options page.

    Reporting Parameter Group

The Growth Report shows data changes across two specific time periods: a pretest reporting period and a posttest reporting period.

For each reporting period, you can use the entire school year, a marking period that has been set up by a district level administrator/school level administrator for your school, or you can set your own range by choosing a starting and ending date.

Use this option to choose which type of test you want to create the report for: Enterprise, Enterprise and Non-Enterprise, Algebra, or Geometry.

If Algebra or Geometry is chosen, Grade Equivalent (GE), Percentile Rank (PR), and Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE) scores will not be shown on the report, and Student Growth Percentile (SGP) will not be calculated.

Use this option to make the data in the report more manageable by only showing a concise summary of it.

    • If Yes is chosen for this option, the Sort By option will not be available.

Use this option to choose whether to show each student's GE score on the report.

Choose how to group the information on the report: by class, grade, teacher, or not grouped.

    • If one or more specific classes were chosen for the Select Students option, this option will automatically be set to Class.
    • If one or more specific groups were chosen for the Select Students option, this option will automatically be set to Group.

Note: This report uses both the Group By and Sort By options; if a Group By option is chosen, it is applied first on the report.

Choose how to sort information on the report: by students' last names or by their student IDs.

Note: This report uses both the Group By and Sort By options; if a Group By option is chosen, it is applied first on the report.

    • If you select Yes for the Summary Only option, the Sort By option will not be available.

Use this option to have the information for each selected set print on a separate page.

Use this option to print a list of the options you've chosen on the report. If you decide to run the report again at a later date, you can refer to this list of options to make sure you're using the same ones.

  6. When you are finished choosing options, click View Report.
  7. Star Math will generate the report. When it's ready, the report will open in Adobe Reader, or your default PDF reader.
