Editing the Question Type Preference

Who can do this with default capabilities?

District Administrator, School Administrator, Teacher

The Question Type preference allows you to choose the type of question your students will have to answer during practices and tests. In addition to choosing a question type for the class, you can set exceptions for certain students in the class so that they can use a different question type.

Note: District staff and school staff can view the settings, but they cannot change the preference.

Question Types

These question types are available (Multiple-Choice is the default):

  • Free Response: For Free-Response, or Open-Ended, questions, the program will not display any answers for your students to choose from. Students will need to type their answer and then press Enter or return to go to the next problem.
  • Some levels cannot use Free-Response questions; they always use Multiple-Choice. For a list of the levels, see Levels That Use Only Multiple Choice.

  • Multiple Choice: Your students will be shown three answers to choose from. They will use the mouse (on computer), keyboard (computer and NEO 2), or buttons (Renaissance Responder) to choose answers.
  • For more information about what students see and do, see How Students Answer Questions.

Use the Multiple Choice Shortcut Keys option to define which keys on the keyboard will correspond to the three answer choices (left, middle, and right) that students will see. The default keys are A, S, and D. You can use the alphabet keys, but not number or symbol keys. (Shortcut keys do not apply to Renaissance Responders.)

What the Preference Affects

This preference affects:

  • MathFacts in a Flash Renaissance Place (computer or tablet)
  • NEO 2 using the MathFacts in a Flash RP SmartApplet
  • Responder model RESP using firmware version 4.03 and above and MathFacts in a Flash Renaissance Place (shortcut keys do not affect Renaissance Responders)
  • Renaissance Home Connect
  • Note: Renaissance Responders and NEO 2 will no longer be supported after future software updates.

This preference does not affect:

  • NEO 2 using the MathFacts in a Flash (offline) SmartApplet
  • Renaissance Responders that are using a firmware version lower than 4.03 or that are using MathFacts in a Flash Offline

Changing the Settings

  1. On the Home page, select MathFacts in a Flash, then Preferences as shown below.

  2. If necessary, use the School and Class drop-down lists to choose the school and class.
  3. Under the Classroom Preferences, select Question Type.
  4. To change class setting, select Free Response (Open-Ended Questions) or Multiple Choice to choose the question format that you want students to see for practices and tests.
  5. If you want to choose which keyboard keys that students can use to answer multiple-choice questions, check Multiple Choice Shortcut Keys. Then, select the drop-down list for each distractor and choose the letter key that you want students to press to select that answer. (You cannot select numbers or symbols.)

  6. To choose different settings for some of the students, select Add Students above the Exceptions table.
  7. In the list of students on the right, check the students who need a different setting from the class. Then, select < Add.

The students that you added will be listed in the Exceptions to Class Setting table on the left. For each student, choose either Free Response or Multiple Choice.

Once you have made a student an exception, that student will not be affected by the class setting unless you remove the student from the exception list.

  8. To save your changes, select Save. (To exit without saving your changes, select Cancel.)
  9. To return the class setting to the default setting (Multiple Choice), select Default. This does not change any exceptions individual students.
