How Students Work in English in a Flash

Things to check before students start working in the program

  • Administrators must add students to the software and enroll them in English in a Flash classes.
  • Make sure a PDF Reader and Adobe Flash Player are installed on each computer that students will use. For more information, see Installing the Necessary Software to Use English in a Flash.
  • Make sure headphones are available. Students use headphones to hear the audio that goes with English in a Flash lessons and quizzes.
  • Make sure the students know their user names and passwords.

Preparing Students to Use the Program

  1. Explain to students that the English in a Flash program will help them improve their English language skills.
  2. To show students what the program looks like and how to use it, use the Teacher Mode.
  3. Review the buttons in the program with your students to make sure they know what they mean and how to use them.
  4. Show students how to log in. Students should be able to log in unassisted after a few sessions.
  5. Remind students to raise their hands if they have a problem using the program.

Session 1

In session 1 for a chapter, students view a mouse tutorial and pretest, watch a lesson with 90 words, and take a quiz on the words.

After logging in, the student selects English in a Flash. The student may need to choose a school if the student is using English in a Flash at more than one school.

Mouse Tutorial and Pretest

  1. After students log in the first time, the Welcome screen appears briefly and then disappears.
  2. The first time students use English in a Flash, they watch and listen to a mouse tutorial to learn how the program works and how to use the mouse.
  3. During the tutorial, the teacher can hit the Ctrl and S keys (Windows) or the control and S keys (Macintosh) to skip to the transition screen that normally appears at the end of the tutorial. (Students can move the volume control to make the audio louder or softer.)

  4. At the end of the tutorial, students hear, "Let's begin. Choose the correct picture. Select the arrow to begin." Students click the arrow at the bottom of the screen.

Pretest

Next, the student takes a pretest with up to 90 items. Notice that the top right corner of the screen shows the student which task he or she is on.

For each item, students see three graphics and hear one vocabulary word pronounced. The student must select the graphic that matches each word. Students have ten seconds after the audio stops to answer each question; they cannot select an answer until the audio stops. If the item times out before the student responds, the program goes to the next item.

Students can use the buttons on the screen to stop or pause the pretest or to repeat the audio.

If the student answers 84% or less of the items correctly (14 or more incorrect answers), the pretest stops, and lesson 1 begins. If the student answers 85%-92% of the items correctly, the program will go to lesson 3 instead of lesson 1. If the student answers 93% or more of the items correctly, the program will skip Chapter 1 and go to Chapter 2.

After the pretest, the student selects continue to go on or exit to stop working in the program for now.

Lesson 1

Next, lesson 1 typically begins.

Students see a series of pictures and hear the word that goes with each picture. The pictures appear in random order and are repeated during the lesson.

There are 90 vocabulary words in the chapter. Each vocabulary word answered correctly in the pretest is only shown once. All incorrect words, or words not seen in the pretest, are presented four times.

Students can pause or stop the lesson using the buttons on the screen.

After the lesson, the student selects continue to go on or exit to stop working in the program for now.

Quiz 1

Next, the student sees quiz 1.

As in the pretest, the student hears a word and selects the matching picture. The quiz includes words missed or not seen in the pretest.

Students can use the buttons on the screen to pause or stop the quiz. If the student stops a quiz, it will start over the next time the student works in the program.

The quiz will stop after the student answers three items incorrectly.

When the quiz is done, the program shows the student how many words he or she answered correctly in quiz 1 and the pretest. Then, the student must select exit (x) to end the session.

Session 2

If students get all 90 words correct on Quiz 1, after logging in, students skip lesson 2 and start work on lesson 3 (without a Review quiz).

In Session 2, students see lesson 2, which includes the same words and pictures and now also shows students the word for each picture. After the lesson, students take a quiz.

Lesson 2

After logging in and selecting English in a Flash, students begin lesson 2.

As in lesson 1, students see a series of pictures and the word that goes with them, and they hear the word that goes with each picture. The words and pictures are the same as those in lesson 1. Words answered correctly in the pretest are only shown once. Words that were answered incorrectly in the pretest or that were not seen are presented five times in lesson 2.

Students select continue to begin the quiz after lesson 2 ends.

Quiz 2

Students take the quiz by selecting the answer to each question. The quiz includes the words missed or not seen in lesson 1.

When students miss three words or complete the 90-word quiz, the quiz stops, and the feedback page opens. Students select exit to finish work for now and log out of the program.

Session 3

If students get 88 or more words correct on Quiz 2, when they log in again, they skip lesson 3 and start work on lesson 4 without a Review quiz.

In Session 3, students see lesson 3, which includes the same words and pictures as lesson 2. They then take quiz 3. After this session, students have additional options for extra practice and reports.

Lesson 3

After logging in and selecting English in a Flash, students begin lesson 3.

In lesson 3, students see a series of pictures and the word that goes with each picture. They also hear the word. The words are the same 90 words included lessons 1 and 2. Words answered correctly in the pretest are only shown once. Words that were answered incorrectly in the pretest or that were not seen are presented five times in lesson 3.

Students select continue to begin the quiz after lesson 3 ends.

Quiz 3

Students take the quiz by selecting the answer to each question. Quiz 3 includes the words missed or not seen in quizzes 1 and 2.

When students miss three words or complete the 90-word quiz, the quiz stops, and the feedback page opens. Students select exit to finish work for now and log out of the program.

After students exit quiz 3, they will be able to select My Practice when they log in for the next session.

Session 4

Starting with Session 4, students can choose to continue their work (Start Working), which may include review before lesson 4 and quiz 4. They can also choose to go to My Practice (described later in this topic), where they can choose the words that they want to review, or they can view reports of the words they have answered correctly and those they still need to study.

After students log in and select English in a Flash, they have three options: Start Working, My Practice, and View Reports.

Start Working may take students to Review or Lesson 4, depending on whether they answered all items correctly on quiz 3.

Review

A Review is not presented to students who answer all items correctly on quiz 3; those students go to Lesson 4.

Students who did not answer all items correctly will see the review after they select Start Working. Students see and hear the word for the picture on each page. The Review includes the words missed or not seen in quiz 3. Each word will be repeated four times.

As soon as the lesson ends, the review quiz starts. Students select the answer to each question; they must answer every question on the quiz.

After the quiz, the feedback page opens and shows the student the number of words answered correctly. Students select continue to begin lesson 4 or exit to finish work for now and log out of the program.

Lesson 4

Students see and hear phrases and sentences describing the picture on each page. 40 phrases and sentences are included, and each phrase or sentence is repeated four times.

After lesson 4 ends, students select continue to begin the quiz.

Quiz 4

Students take the quiz by selecting the answer to each question.

When students get six incorrect answers, or when they finish the quiz, the quiz stops, and the feedback page opens, showing the number of correct answers. Students select exit to finish work for now and log out of the program.

Session 5

In Session 5, when students select Start Working, they may go to review or directly to lesson 5, depending on how they have done on previous quizzes. This session includes lesson 5 and quiz 5.

When students log in, they have three choices: Start Working, My Practice, or View Reports. Start Working may take students to review, depending on whether they answered all items correctly on quiz 4.

Review

A Review is not presented to students who answer all items correctly on quiz 4; those students go to Lesson 5.

Students who did not answer all items correctly will see the review after they select Start Working. Students see and hear 40 phrases and sentences. The Review includes the items missed or not seen in quiz 4. Each item will be repeated four times.

As soon as the lesson ends, the review quiz starts. Students select the answer to each question; they must answer every question on the quiz.

After the quiz, the feedback page opens and shows the student the number of items answered correctly. Students select continue to begin lesson 5 or exit to finish work for now and log out of the program.

Lesson 5

Students see and hear phrases and sentences describing the picture on each page. 50 phrases and sentences are included, and each phrase or sentence is repeated four times.

After lesson 5 ends, students select continue to begin the quiz.

Quiz 5

Students take the quiz by selecting the answer to each question.

When students get six incorrect answers, or when they finish the quiz, the quiz stops, and the feedback page opens, showing the number of correct answers. Students select exit to finish work for now and log out of the program.

Session 6

Session 6 is not presented to students who answered all the questions correctly on Quiz 5. When these students log in, they will start with the pretest for a new chapter, followed by a lesson and quiz with 90 new vocabulary words.

Session 6 includes review and a review quiz.

When students log in, they have three choices: Start Working, My Practice, or View Reports. Start Working may take students to review.

Review

Students see and hear 50 phrases and sentences. The Review includes the items missed or not seen in quiz 5. Each item will be repeated four times.

As soon as the lesson ends, the review quiz starts. Students select the answer to each question; they must answer every question on the quiz.

After the quiz, the feedback page opens and shows the student the number of items answered correctly. Students select exit to finish work for now and log out of the program.

The next time students log in, they will start the pretest for the next chapter, followed by a lesson and quiz, with 90 new vocabulary words. Each chapter follows the pattern of chapter 1.

My Practice

My Practice is only available after students have completed session 3. It allows students to choose specific words or phrases to review. My Practice does not include a quiz.

After students log in and go to the Home page, they choose English in a Flash, then My Practice.

Students choose a library from the drop-down list if necessary. They also select the chapter they want to practice if necessary. Then, students choose the items to practice.

Each highlighted item is selected for practice. Items missed on the quizzes are pre-selected (highlighted) for practice, such as the dress, clouds, feet, desk, and egg above. Students select each item that they want to include to highlight it, or they select a highlighted item to remove that selection. When students move the mouse over an item that they want to add, a yellow border outlines that item as shown with "eating" above.

Students can select up to 90 items for My Practice. The number of items that has been selected is shown in the top right corner of the page. In the example above, 38 words have been selected.

If students remove any pre-selected items and start My Practice, the list of pre-selected items won't be saved, but students can still see the original list by printing the Words to Study Report.

Below the pictures, the highlighted number shows which page of items the student is viewing in the selected chapter. In the example below, the student is viewing page 3 of the items. The student can select any of the numbers to go to a different page and find more items.

After selecting the items, students select start to begin the My Practice lesson.

The My Practice lesson starts. Students see and hear the word or phrase for each picture on the page.

There is no quiz after the practice. Students can either choose a chapter and practice again, select continue to go back to the Home page, or select exit to finish work for now and log out.

View Reports

After completing quiz 3 in the first chapter, students can print the following two reports:
