Set a Reading Practice Certification Goal for a Student

When you set Reading Practice certification goals, Accelerated Reader automatically monitors student progress toward the goals and awards certifications when students meet the requirements. (You also need to enable the TWI Monitoring Preference in order for the software to automatically track certifications.)

Certification Level Criteria Recommended Number of Recertifications
Ready Reader Accumulate 5 points on books read To, read With, and/or read Independently. No more than 5 times
Independent Reader Read at least 3 books Independently with a 1.2 or higher ATOS book level (or 160L Lexile® Measure) and earn 10 points. Only books read Independently count toward the 3-book goal, but books read To, With, or Independently count toward the points. Do not recertify at this level
Rising Reader Read 3 books Independently with a 1.6 or higher ATOS book level (or 250L Lexile® Measure) and earn 10 points from books at or above that book level. Only books read Independently count toward the 3-book goal and points. No more than 5 times
Super Reader Read 3 books Independently with a 2.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 330L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least 1 point. Only books read Independently count toward the 3-book goal and points. No more than 5 times
Advanced Reader Read 3 books with a 3.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 510L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least 2 points. Only books read Independently count toward the certification. No more than 5 times
Star Reader Read 3 books with a 4.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 660L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least 4 points. Only books read Independently count toward the certification. No more than 5 times
Classic Reader Read 3 books with a 6.0 or higher ATOS book level (or 900L Lexile® Measure) that are each worth at least 7 points. Only books read Independently count toward certification. No more than 5 times
Honors Reader Read books Independently from a special list of challenging literature (created by teachers and librarians), and accumulate 100 points from the quizzes. Teachers must track this certification manually using information in the software about books read and points earned; the software does not track this certification. TOPS Reports and the Student Record Report can help teachers track this certification. Not needed at this level

Certification goals are different from the Reading Practice goals (percent correct, average book level, and points).

Who can do this with standard capabilities?

District Administrators, School Administrators, Teachers

  1. On the Home page, if you see Accelerated Reader, click it, then click Record Books and Goals.

If you have the Accelerated Reader 360 Suite, select Independent Reading, then Record Books and Goals.

If necessary, choose the school and class from the drop-down lists. Choose My Classes instead of a school if you want only the Accelerated Reader RP classes you are assigned to as a teacher to be in the class list, regardless of the school.

  2. Click Reading Practice Certifications in the list of Record Books.
  3. The View Reading Practice Certifications Record Book page opens and lists the students in your class. For each student, the page shows the certification goal or the last certification achieved. It also includes the date the student started work on the certification and the date the student achieved it (if it has been achieved and there is no new goal). The Status column shows you whether the certification is in progress, has been achieved, or needs approval, and whether a new goal is needed.
    • To set a goal for a student who has not achieved any certifications, click Set Goal in the Actions/New Goals column.
    • Students who have already achieved certifications will have multiple links in the Actions/New Goals column. To set a goal for one of these students, you can click the link for the certification you would like the student to work toward or you can click More to choose a different goal. (If you click one of the certifications shown in this column, the new goal is set immediately and is reflected in this list; you do not need to go on to the next step.)
  4. If you clicked Set Goal or More for a student, the Set Student Reading Practice Certification Goal page appears.
    1. Choose the certification the student should work toward from the Current Certification Goal drop-down list.
    2. Click one of the available options to set the start date for the student's work toward this certification. The start date helps Accelerated Reader decide which quizzes to count toward the certification. You can set the start date immediately after the student's last achieved certification, at the start of a marking period, or on another date that you specify. If you choose the start of a marking period, choose the marking period from the drop-down list. If you choose Other date, type the start date, or click the calendar button to choose a date.
  5. Click Save when you're finished.
