Editing the Classroom Student Quizzing Preferences

The Classroom Student Quizzing preferences include the following: TOPS Report Printing, Monitor Password Required, Vocabulary Practice Include Definitions, Literacy Skills Retakes, Other Reading Passing Percent, Vocabulary Practice Review Percent, and Vocabulary Practice Student Comprehension. Each preference is described in the step below with the directions for changing its settings.

Who can do this with standard capabilities?

District Administrators, School Administrators, Teachers

If you copied classes from the previous school year, your classroom preference settings will carry over from the previous school year too.

  1. On the Home page, if you see Accelerated Reader, click it, then click Preferences.

If you have the Accelerated Reader 360 Suite, select Independent Reading, then Preferences.

  2. Click Student Quizzing in the Classroom Preferences section on the Preferences page.
  3. If necessary, choose a school and class from the drop-down lists on the View Classroom Student Quizzing Preferences page. Click My Classes instead of a school if you want only the Accelerated Reader RP classes you are assigned to as a teacher to be in the class list, regardless of the school.
  4. Click Edit Student Quizzing.
  5. The Edit Classroom Student Quizzing Preferences page opens and shows the name of each preference, a brief description, and the current settings. You may have to scroll down the page to see all the preferences.

Steps 5-13 explain each of the preferences on this page and how to edit the settings.

  6. TOPS Report Printing: This preference specifies whether the Print TOPS Report button will appear on the Quiz Score page after passed or failed Reading Practice, Other Reading, and/or Literacy Skills Quizzes, and after Vocabulary Practice Quizzes. It also shows whether the classroom or the school settings are being used.
  7. To edit:

    1. In the first column, choose whether to use the classroom or the school settings from the Use drop-down list. For your reference, you can see the current school settings in the School Settings column.
    2. You will be able to choose to use and edit the classroom settings only if the School TOPS Report Printing Preference has been set to allow these settings to be edited at the classroom level.

If you chose to use the School Settings, you are done changing this preference.

If you chose to use the Classroom Settings, go on to step b.

    3. Under the Edit Classroom Settings column, for each quiz type, check the Passed or Failed box if you want to show the Print TOPS Report button on the Quiz Score page after quizzes the students pass or fail.
    4. Check the Printing Enabled box if you want to show the Print TOPS Report button on the Quiz Score page after every completed Vocabulary Practice Quiz.
  8. Monitor Password Required: These settings show whether (and when) a monitor password is required when your students take Reading Practice, Other Reading, Literacy Skills, and/or Vocabulary Practice Quizzes. A monitor password can be required before or after a quiz. This preference also shows whether the classroom or the school settings are being used.
  9. To edit:

    1. In the first column, choose whether to use the classroom or the school settings from the Use drop-down list. For your reference, you can see the current school settings in School Settings column.
    2. You will be able to choose to use and edit the classroom settings only if the School Monitor Password Required Preference has been set to allow these settings to be edited at the classroom level.

If you chose to use the School Settings, you are done changing this preference.

If you chose to use the Classroom Settings, go on to step b.

    3. Under the Edit Classroom Settings column, for each quiz type, check the Before Quizzing or the After Quizzing box if you want to require the monitor password to be entered before or after a student takes a quiz. Note: Reading Practice and Other Reading Quizzes share this setting. You cannot set them separately.
  10. Vocabulary Practice Include Definitions: These settings show if the definitions are shown along with the vocabulary words when a student views vocabulary for a quiz. This preference also shows whether the classroom or the school settings are being used.
  11. To edit:

    1. In the first column, choose whether to use the classroom or the school settings from the Use drop-down list. For your reference, you can see the current school settings in the School Settings column.
    2. You will be able to choose to use and edit the classroom settings only if the School Vocabulary Practice Include Definitions Preference has been set to allow these settings to be edited at the classroom level.

If you chose to use the Classroom Settings, go on to step b.

    3. Check the Show definitions box if you want definitions to be included when your students view vocabulary.
  12. Literacy Skills Retakes: These settings show the number of times (if at all) students are allowed to retake the Literacy Skills Quiz for a book. This preference also shows whether the classroom or the school settings are being used. Note: Even if students are allowed to retake a Literacy Skills Quiz, the questions on the quizzes will probably be different since the program randomly selects the questions presented on each quiz from a larger bank of quiz questions.
  13. To edit:

    1. In the first column, choose whether to use the classroom or the school settings from the Use drop-down list. For your reference, you can see the school settings in the School Settings column.
    2. You will be able to choose to use and edit the classroom settings only if the School Literacy Skills Retakes Preference has been set to allow these settings to be edited at the classroom level.

If you chose to use the School Settings, you are done changing this preference.

If you chose to use the Classroom Settings, go on to step b.

    3. Under the Edit Classroom Settings column, choose the number of times (0, 1, or 2) you want to allow your students to retake the Literacy Skills quiz for a book from the Retakes drop-down list.
  14. Other Reading Passing Percent: These settings show the passing percentage for Other Reading Quizzes (the default is 60% for quizzes with 10 or fewer questions and 70% for quizzes with more than 10 questions).
  15. To edit:

    1. Type the minimum passing percentage that you want to apply on quizzes with 10 or fewer questions.
    2. Type the minimum passing percentage that you want to apply on quizzes with more than 10 questions.
  16. Vocabulary Practice Review Percent: This setting shows the percentage of review words on a Vocabulary Practice Quiz. The program uses that percentage of the first-try new words on the quiz to determine the number of review words to present to the student. For example, if a quiz has ten first-try new words on it and you've set the percentage at 20%, the program will present two review words to the student on that quiz.
  17. A student will not begin receiving review words on quizzes until 14 days after taking his or her first Vocabulary Practice Quiz.

To edit this preference, type the percentage you want to use. You can use whole numbers from 0 to 100. The default is 20%.

  18. Vocabulary Practice Student Comprehension: This setting shows whether a student must pass the Reading Practice Quiz for a title before the program will allow the student to take the Vocabulary Practice Quiz for the same title, provided your school has both quizzes installed for the title the student chooses.
  19. If you enable this preference, students will be asked if they want to take the Vocabulary Practice Quiz after they pass the Reading Practice Quiz for a title.

To edit the setting, check the box if the students must pass the Reading Practice Quiz for a title before taking the Vocabulary Practice Quiz for the same title.

  20. Click Save when you are finished.
